ADVERTISING
This site may be partially supported by revenue from advertisements, in the form of text and banner ads placed on the site. In this case, accepting advertisements allows us to provide our service at no charge to consumers. Site content and editorial decisions are made by the site editors without reference to advertiser preferences.
All advertisements running on this site are labeled with the word "Advertisement" to distinguish them from non-paid content. We make no warranties concerning the products or services advertised on the site by the third parties who have placed the ads. We reserve the right to discontinue the display of any advertisement for any reason, and at any time.
Ads displayed on this site will fall into one of two categories: 1) ads we have contracted for directly, and ads which have been placed onto our site via a third party we have contracted with (e.g., Google or other advertising network). We have direct control over the former category, but only indirect control over the later. Our policy is to only run ads that are 'non-harmful' in nature. Ads promoting pornography, gambling, alcohol, or similar 'vices' are unacceptable to us. We enforce this policy proactively for direct ads, but can only react to third-party ads that do not meet our standards.
Should you find an advertisement running on the site that you believe is inappropriate, please let us know about it by contacting the webmaster at editor@centersite.net. Please identify the specific advertisement you wish to be evaluated for blocking by clicking on the advertisement and sending us the domain of the resulting landing page. Within the Google AdWords system, at least, the only way to block an ad is by submitting the ad's destination domain to a blocking filter.
If this site is showing advertisements, it is also allowing advertisers to engage in "behavioral advertising", which is to say, advertisers may use a cookie or third party web beacon to identify your unique browser across time as you visit different websites. This is done so as to learn about your browsing habits and show you ads that are personalized and more likely to fit with those habits so you will be more likely to buy stuff that is advertised. Behavioral advertising is on by default, but you can opt out of it if you like.  To do so you can visit networkadvertising.org.  More information on behavioral advertising can be found in the section "Use of Cookies" found in our Privacy Policy.

Information Gathered:
We gather information from the people who use our Site so that we can offer our users a better, more fulfilling experience. We gather this information in a manner that provides for protection of personal privacy, and with an eye towards maintaining the security of all gathered information. This document details how we go about collecting, maintaining and storing information.

These gathering processes apply to all users of the Site. There is no obvious indication that these implicit data gathering activities are taking place. There is no way to opt-out of these implicit information recording activities.
  • Web Server Logs and Web AnalyticsLike most sites, we keep a running record of what pages are requested on our Site. We do this both by analyzing the web server logs generated by our web server software, and also by including in our pages one or more web analytics javascript code blocks as provided by Google Analytics, Omniture and/or other web analytics firms we may have authorized to monitor our website. Web server logs and analytics data contain information about what pages are most popular, and how many pages are viewed in a given time period. Though directly identifying informmation is not included in with the data collected by these activities, IP addresses are recorded as are timestamps.
  • Intra-Website SearchesWe record the keywords and search terms site users type into the search box provided on this website so as to better keep track of what information readers are seeking. IP and timestamp data are collected for each search.
  • Related Articles
This website may feature a "Related Articles" box at the base of documents containing links to other related documents in the site. If this is the case, the list of relevant links was created with the assistance of a third party Google API.  We cache this search result list to reduce the need to call the API all the time, but if you are there when the cache needs to be refreshed, your IP address will be sent to Google in the process of the search.
  • Searchable Resource DatabasesIf our site contains searchable resource databases, we record zip and postal codes site users type into the resource search boxes so as to better keep track of what geographic locations our visitors are seeking resources within. Records are also kept of which detailed resource listings are viewed. Sums of listing viewings may be shared with listing owners on a periodic basis.
  • Child and Elder Care Facility SearchesWe record the zip and postal codes site users type into the care facility search boxes which may appear on this website so as to better keep track of what geographic locations our visitors are seeking care facilities within. IP and timestamp data are collected for each search.
Specific Information Gathering
Specific information gathering refers to information about site usage that gets recorded whenever site visitors take specific, and optional actions within the Site. Site visitors can avoid these records being kept by simply opting to not participate in these options.
SITE READERS MAY HAVE THE OPTION TO POST CONTENT TO THE SITE. IN GENERAL, AND UNLESS OTHERWISE DESCRIBED BELOW (IN THE PRIVACY POLICY DOCUMENT) OR OTHERWISE POSTED AT THE POINT OF DATA COLLECTION, INDIVIDUALS SUBMITTING CONTENT TO THE SITE RETAIN OWNERSHIP OF THEIR OWN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. HOWEVER, BY SUBMITTING CONTENT TO THE SITE, THEY EXPLICITLY AGREE TO GRANT TO THE SITE A TRANSFERABLE, PERPETUAL AND UNREVOKABLE LICENSE TO PRESERVE, DISPLAY, EDIT, REMIX, MASHUP AND/OR RESELL THAT CONTENT IN ANY FORM OR FORMAT THE SITE SEES FIT FOR ANY PURPOSE THE SITE SEES FIT. SITE READERS WHO DO NOT WISH TO GRANT THIS LICENSE SHOULD NOT POST CONTENT TO THIS SITE.

THIS SITE DOES NOT MAINTAIN MEDICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL RECORDS. THIS SITE EXPLICITLY DISCLAIMS ANY DUTY TO MAINTAIN ANY SORT OF MEDICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL RECORD ON BEHALF OF ANY READER WHO HAS OPTIONALLY AND VOLUNTARILY CHOSEN TO STORE PERSONAL DATA ON THE SITE.
  • Article Comments The Site may offer readers the opportunity to append comments to various articles contained within the Site. Commenting on the Site's articles or resouces is entirely optional. No login is required to make comments, and comments may be made anonymously at readers' discretion. However, IP and timestamp information is recorded along with each commment submitted to the Site. All comments may be evaluted and/or edited by Site staff members prior to or after publication. Any comment may be deleted from the Site at any time for any reason at the sole discretion of Site staff.

  • Community Participation The Site may offer readers the optional opportunity to participate in an online community consisting of forum and/or chat software in which various readers may communicate with one another. Participation in the community is entirely voluntary. Readers must sign up for a community account before they can post comments within the community. Community accounts are provided at the sole discretion of Site staff members who may revoke such accounts for any reason at any time. At minimum, a username and a valid email address must be provided by prospective community members, although validated members with active accounts may add additional information to their accounts at their discretion. Members of the community must read and abide by the community rules at all times or risk the deactivation of their accounts. Community data is stored on-site. Community members may deactivate their accounts at any time. However, deactiviation of an account will not trigger automatic removal of content submissions previously made to the community using that account.

  • Questions and Answers The Site may offer readers the optional opportunity to submit questions to the Site with the hope that the Site will choose to publish those questions along with a response. Submitting a question to the site is an entirely voluntary activity. Comments may be submitted to the site in an anonymous manner. Submitted comments are stored on-site. The Site selects from among the submitted questions according to its own criteria, and many questions may not be answered or published. The Site does not warrenty that it will provide a response to submitted questions. As described above, A TRANSFERABLE, PERPETUAL AND UNREVOKABLE LICENSE TO PRESERVE, DISPLAY, EDIT, REMIX, MASHUP AND/OR RESELL SUBMITTED CONTENT IN ANY FORM AND FOR ANY PURPOSE is granted to the Site by readers at the moment readers submit questions. READERS WHO DO NOT AGREE TO GRANT THE SITE THIS LICENSE WITH REGARD TO THEIR QUESTION SHOULD NOT SUBMIT QUESTIONS TO THE SITE.

  • Email Newsletter This site may offer an optional period email newsletter that readers can sign up for. If this is the case, signup links will be provided on header, footer and/or navigation areas of the site. Clicking on these links will take readers off-site to a trusted third party resource specializing in email newsletters (e.g., Constant Contact) where their registration will be accepted and recorded. Interested readers are asked to provide their name, zipcode and email address. Records are maintained off-site at the trusted third party email provider. Copies of newsletter subscription lists may be archived and stored by Site managers for backup purposes. Subscription to the newsletter is completely option. Subscribed readers may unsubscribe themselves at any time by following links provided for this purpose within each newsletter mailing.

  • Therapist Listings The site may offer professional readers the opportunity to submit information to the Site for the purpose of promoting their clinic or clinical practice. Submitted data are stored on-site and may be made available to the general readership of the Site in the form of a searchable database of therapist listings. Participation in this listing database is an entirely voluntary activity. Professional readers must sign up for a site account before they can submit their listing data. Accounts are available for free. Identifying information is asked for during the signup and listing process, and is stored along side of the other listing data. Readers with site accounts can manage their listings through the Site's web-based Control Panels and may publish, unpublish, edit, delete or feature each listing. A valid username and password is required before entry to the Control Panels will be granted. Readers who have lost their passwords can have them mailed to the email they provided when their account was created, or, alternatively, the Site's staff will reset them upon request from a valid email account. It is free to publish listings. However, in exchange for a small fee listings can be featured to make them stand out amongst the competition. Details pertaining to the creation and maintainance of therapist listings are provided in the Therapists Listing control panel.

  • Job Listings The site may offer professional readers the opportunity to submit information to the Site for the purpose of advertising available jobs they are trying to fill. Submitted data are stored on-site and may be made available to the general readership of the Site in the form of a searchable jobs database. Participation in this jobs database is an entirely voluntary activity. Professional readers must sign up for a site account before they can submit their job data. Accounts are available for free. Identifying information is asked for during the signup and listing process, and is stored along side of the other job data. Readers with site accounts can manage their job listings through the Site's web-based Control Panels and may publish, unpublish, edit, delete or feature each listing. A valid username and password is required before entry to the Control Panels will be granted. Readers who have lost their passwords can have them mailed to the email they provided when their account was created, or, alternatively, the Site's staff will reset them upon request from a valid email account. It is free to publish jobs. However, in exchange for a small fee listings can be featured to make them stand out amongst the competition. Details pertaining to the creation and maintainance of job listings are provided in the Job Listing control panel.

  • Child and Eldercare Listings The site may offer readers the opportunity to submit information to the Site for the purpose of advertising child and eldercare facilities they are associated with or for the purpose of sharing information about child and eldercare facilities they are familiar with. Submitted data are stored on-site and may be made available to the general readership of the Site in the form of a searchable care database. Participation in this care database is an entirely voluntary activity. Professional readers must sign up for a site account before they can submit their care data. Accounts are available for free. Identifying information is asked for during the signup and listing process, and is stored along side of the other care data. Readers with site accounts can manage their care listings through the Site's web-based Control Panels and may publish, unpublish, edit, delete or feature each listing. A valid username and password is required before entry to the Control Panels will be granted. Readers who have lost their passwords can have them mailed to the email they provided when their account was created, or, alternatively, the Site's staff will reset them upon request from a valid email account. Care listings are automatically published for free by default. However, in exchange for a small fee care listings can be featured to make them stand out amongst the competition. Details on featuring care listings and/or on how to add information about particular care facilities to the Site's database are provided in the Site's Care Search interface.

  • Tests and Questionnaires The Site may offer readers the optional opportunity to take various tests and questionnaires designed to measure personality characteristics, detect the presence of various illnesses and disorders, or similar activities. Taking tests is a completely optional activity on the site. Readers may take tests and receive test feedback in an anonymous fashion (without signing into a testing account). In this case, testing data will be deleted from the database shortly after the readers' session completes. Readers may also optionally create a test account (requiring that they supply a username and password), and sign into this account before they take tests. In this second case, readers' test responses and scores will be preserved for an indefinite period of time so that they may: 1) complete longer tests across several sessions, and 2) review their test scores as they change over time. For each test taken which is saved to a test account, all test item/response pairs are saved, as well as any test scores which may be derived from analysis of these item/response pairs. Test data is stored on-site. Beyond the username (which can be any acceptable alphanumeric string), and an optional email address, no other identifying information is required to create a testing account.

The Site will make commercially reasonable efforts to maintain reader's access to their accounts. Readers who successfully log into their account may delete test results at their option (but not test items which have been stored separately) and/or review their stored test results. However, the Site makes no warrenties regarding how long test data will be maintained within individual accounts. The Site will make commercially reasonable efforts to insure the security of test data. However, The Site does not warrenty that any test account will remain the exclusive preserve of the reader who generated it. Readers who wish to take special precautions to insure their privacy should use a meaningless username, not provide any email address, and store their username/password combination in a safe location when that entry token combination is first generated. It will not be possible to replace or retrieve lost account combinations in the absense of a working email account.

As described above, A TRANSFERABLE, PERPETUAL AND UNREVOKABLE LICENSE TO PRESERVE, DISPLAY, EDIT, REMIX, MASHUP AND/OR RESELL THAT CONTENT IN ANY FORM AND FOR ANY PURPOSE is granted to the Site by readers at the moment readers submit test data. Though not obligated to use this data for any specific purpose, the Site contemplates aggregating the data and giving it to the scientific community to help foster the development of better psychological tests, and also using the data to compile normative tables and/or benchmark products for resale. No test data product generated by the Site will ever include identifying information such as email addresses.

Lost test account passwords cannot be recovered but can be replaced if an email is on file as part of reader's accounts. The Site will reset passwords and send them to the email address on file upon a reader's request.

  • Surveys From time to time this Site may offer readers the opportunity to participate in surveys. Participation in all surveys is completely optional. Readers' responses to survey questions becomes the exclusive property of the Site. Data is stored on-site. The Site will use the information gathered from the surveys to better understand reader demographics, interests, desires, questions and comments. There is no option for readers to retract their responses from submitted surveys.
Use Of Cookies
This Site saves a session identifier cookie (a long random string of letters and numbers) on readers' computers. This session identifier uniquely identifies the user for the duration of each web session and then expires. No identifying information can be tied to this identifier once a session has ended. Sessions expire after approximately 25 minutes of browser inactivity, or when a client explicitly and completely closes his or her browser software.
If we display advertising on this Site, then advertising helps to underwrite the costs of providing readers with this Site. Third Party Companies placing ad banners on our Site have the ability to set persistant ad cookie files into your web browser that uniquely identify your computer. Ad cookies specifically identify your computer only and not your personal identity. Ad cookies set by third party advertisers are not under the direct control of this Site. Ad cookies may be set to persist for weeks or months or indefinitely. As you travel around the internet and visit different sites which also feature advertising created by the same companies advertising on this Site, those companies can read the cookies they have laid down from when you visited our site and know what sites you are visiting. Similarly, if you have a third party ad cookie that was laid down during a visit to a different site and you then visit our site, the third party ad companies can know that your computer was used to visit our site. The ad companies use this intelligence data to personalize advertising appeals so that they will best appeal to the sort of person who frequents the sites you frequent. Though we don't much personally care for this practice, we have decided to accept it, as the alternative is to not display ads at all. If that were to occur, we would have much less revenue and we might not be able to continue providing this Site for your use. In general, we deal with reputable ad companies, and the ad cookies that are set into your computer represent current mainstream business practices. Also, note that we do not communicate any information to the ad companies that would allow them to link your identity to the cookies they set.

If you are concerned about ad cookies, we recommend that you use a respected spyware/adware software package designed for your operating system to periodically clean your browser of offending cookies and other unwholesome materials. Note that this sort of software cleaner may be available as freeware. Last time we looked, Snapfiles.Com had a good list of candidates you might consider trying out.
This website may feature advertisments published as part of Google's AdSense advertising program. As of April 8, 2009, Google AdSenses intends to implement Interest-Based advertisements, which means they will be setting a cookie (specifically, a DoubleClick DART cookie - Google now owns DoubleClick) into your browser's cookie file which will allow them to track the websites that you visit and classify you into one or more interest-categories such as (hypothetically) "Sports Interest" if you were to visit ESPN.com, or "Financial Information Interest" if you went and visited the Bloomberg website. They intend to use this information to show you a tailored set of advertisements, different than they show to other people, which will be determined based on the characteristic interest category profile they build up about your browsing habits. The Google Interest-Based Advertising program and policies are described here. You are opted-in to this program by default - you do not get an initial choice whether to participate. However, you do have the option to opt-out, which you can do here. The problem with opting out is that Google sets a cookie into your browser telling it not to set the DART cookie in the first place. Thus, if you delete all of your cookies (which is a good thing to do from time to time), you will delete this opt-out instruction and will have to opt out all over again. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), an advocacy group promoting internet privacy, has worked with Google to develop a plugin for the Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer web browsers which, once installed, will help you maintain your opt-out settings even if you delete all of your browser's cookies. You can download the permanent opt-out plugin here. No plugins exist for other browsers at this time.
If this website serves ads, it also allows third-party companies (including ValueClick and Google's DoubleClick) to collect certain anonymous information when you visit the web site. These companies may use non-personally identifiable information (e.g., click stream information, browser type, time and date, subject of advertisements clicked or scrolled over) during your visits to this and other Web sites in order to provide advertisements about goods and services likely to be of greater interest to you. These companies typically use a cookie or third party web beacon to collect this information, and then coordinate it so as to identify your browser (not you personally but your browser) across time as you visit different websites. To learn more about this practice, known as "behavioral advertising", or to opt-out of this type of advertising, you can visit networkadvertising.org. You may also visit the member privacy page on the ValueClick website.
Use Of The Information
We use the information we gather from you for several purposes:
  • We analyze what our readers like and don't like about our current offerings so that we can design better services. We may share this information in aggregate -- not individual -- form with other third party companies we may contract with for purposes of enhancing or optimizing our site. Any company we contract with for this purpose will be contractually bound to treat the information we disclose as a trade secret.

  • If we serve advertising, we develop summary -- not individual -- statistical reports and share them with our advertisers. An example of a summary report might be to communicate that "200 people clicked on your advertisement today". Advertisers use this information to track the effectiveness of their ad campaigns. We never tell our advertisers who it was that saw or clicked on their advertisements.

  • If we provide a newsletter, subscribers to our general newsletter receive twice-monthly email newsletters describing new content offerings that appear on the Site. Subscribers to our clinical edition newsletter also receive updates about new content on the site, but in this case, the content is more likely to appeal to professionals.

  • We may maintain and make available searchable databases of therapists, clinical jobs, and child and elder care resources.

  • We may maintain and make available to the public a support community focused on mental health and mental illness.

  • We may offer a testing service which readers can use to measure and learn about themselves. We may share test data in aggregate form with research scientists so that they can make better tests. We may develop products and services which rely upon normative test data we capture.
User Control of Submitted Information
  • Site readers have no ability to control general information recording that occurs on the site (e.g., traffic logs)

  • Site readers have no ability to alter the following types of content submissions they may make to the Site:
    • Article Comments
    • Questions and Answers
    • Survey
  • Site readers have some ability to modify the following types of content submissions they make to the Site:
    • Community
    • Tests and Questionnaires

  • Site readers have full ability to modify the following types of content submissions they make to the Site:
    • Therapist Listings
    • Job Listings
    • Child and Eldercare Listings

  • Site readers have full ability to remove themselves from our email newsletter mailing lists.
In general, if you have a concern about information you have submitted to our Site, you should feel free to email the Site editor (editor@centersite.net) and we will see about addressing your concerns.
Special Security Considerations
We employ uniform security measures (e.g., encrypted SSL transmission of data across the web, server firewalling, 24/7 network monitoring) to create and maintain a reasonably secure environment for data storage and transmission. The data we do store is not, in general, highly sensitive and in most cases neither is your real-world identity necessarily linked to that stored information. We do not store information about your medical history which could compromise you were it to be revealed, for instance. Credit card information (which is relevant to readers who choose to feature listings in our resource databases (e.g., therapist, job, or care facilities) is not stored in our database at any time. Instead, the information is stored in a transient session only for as long as is required to transmit the information (via secure SSL) to Authorize.Net for validation.
